Today’s gasoline direct injection (GDi) engines offer improved fuel economy and lower emissions. That’s why more engine and vehicle manufacturers are switching to GDI technology to ensure compliance with ever-lower emissions targets and the driving expectations of their customers. But these high pressure & high performance engines operate to very tight tolerances. Experience tells us such precision components need protecting if the engine is to perform exactly as intended.
Conventional injector cleaners have been created and tested for indirect injected or the so called Port Fuel Injected (PFI) engines and the problems of intake valve deposits (IVD). These chemistries are not developed for deposit control in modern GDI engine technology and will not provide optimum engine protection. Therefore we have developed the JLM GDI Injector Cleaner. Since inception, GDI engines have had known problems with coking—build-up of cooked fuel deposits that foul injectors.
The GDI problems are mainly caused by the higher cylinder temperatures and pressures released into the crankcase which accelerate oil vaporization. Eventually this causes oil droplets to coat the intake valves and injectors. The location and angle of the fuel injectors in GDI systems mean that fresh fuel is not sprayed onto intake valves, so it doesn’t “clean” or cool them by preventing vapour build-up. As a result, this build-up can accumulate and bake onto intake valves and injectors in as little as 16,000 km (10,000 miles).
E10 Fuels
In short, it’s a real problem and is further exacerbated by modern fuels with up to 10 percent ethanol. The initial problem is indicated by poor performance and knocking. Using a fuel without optimized GDI additive technology is likely to lead to fouled injectors and compromised critical engine efficiency. Engine performance drops, fuel economy falters and emissions rise.
With JLM’s novel and cutting-edge fuel additive technology, engine performance is reliably maintained over the whole life of the vehicle. By removing deposits and keeping the injector system clean, the engine will continue to perform as expected.
The JLM GDI Injector Cleaner:
- Removes existing injector deposits
- Prevents injector fouling
- Dramatically reduces particle emissions
- Increases fuel efficiency
- Preserves engine power
- Maintains optimum reliability
And is suitable for all GDI, FSI, TSI, CGI, SIGI engine types.
The JLM GDI Injector Cleaner
Engine technology does not stand still, so why should fuel additives? JLM Lubricants has risen to the challenge to support workshop and car owners with its latest injector cleaner, formulated solely for GDI engines.
The problem with GDI
Tighter component tolerances and higher soot/particulate production make GDI engines highly sensitive to contamination as they age. As the process is gradual, the first issue that many owners report is either an illuminated engine management light, reduced power, or excessive exhaust emissions causing failure of a roadworthiness inspection.
Cleaning-up the mess
As the fuel injectors are exposed to not only heat but also the by-products of the combustion process, contaminations become baked onto the injector tip, blocking its fine holes and altering the spray pattern. Sophisticated engine management will compensate for this injector fouling situation, by adjusting the fuelling automatically. Yet, when the long-term fuel trim deviates beyond a typical 25% from its standard setting, the engine warning lamp is likely to illuminate, accompanied by the reduced power 'limp home' mode.
The challenge is not only to address the symptoms and effect a cure but also curtail future build-up. JLM Lubricants has risen to the challenge and developed its own GDI fuel additive that performs all of these tasks. Its active ingredients not only remove and inhibit fuel injector contamination but also reduce fuel consumption and emissions. For the ultimate protection, we recommend that JLM's GDI Injector cleaner used alongside JLM's Engine Oil Flush and JLM's Air Intake Cleaner during regular maintenance of direct injection gasoline engines.
